The powerfull Gothic fortress was built for Bohemian King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV (so called The Father of Homeland) in 1348–1357. At the time the castle was used for important diplomatic meetings and namely as the treasury for safekeeping of the Bohemian Kingdom and Holy Roman empire Crown Jewels.
