São Carlos is a Brazilian municipality located in the interior of the state of São Paulo, in the Center-East region, at a distance of 58 km from the geographic center (Obelisk), and at a road distance of 230 kilometers from the capital of São Paulo. With an "estimated" population of 254,857 inhabitants, distributed over a total area of ​​1,137 km², it is the 14th largest city in the interior of the state in terms of number of residents.
The city is an important regional industrial center, with the economy based on industrial activities, commerce and services; also in agriculture (in this sector, the production of sugar cane, oranges, milk and chicken stands out). Served by several road and rail systems, São Carlos has a commercial unit of the Swiss multinational Leica-Geosystems and production units of some multinational companies, including Volkswagen, Faber-Castell (the São Carlos subsidiary is the largest in the group worldwide, producing 1.5 billion pencils per year), Electrolux, Tecumseh and Husqvarna.
