St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 (New Orleans, Louisiana)

USA / Louisiana / Gretna / New Orleans, Louisiana
cemetery, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places

Opened in 1789 and once much larger than it is today. Several publications indicate this cemetery was once at least many blocks larger in all directions. Streets and buildings gradually covered the older burials as portions of the cemetery were closed and deconsecrated. It has been suggested the much of Storyville (now Iberville) was built over older areas of St. Louis No.1 and nearby potter's fields, spanning anywhere as far as the current St. Louis No.2 boundary.

Redevelopment of cemeteries already at or over capacity was one of the ways to stop the highly unsanitary re-use of a burial ground. Liming and raising the ground level were also done to help prevent unwanted disinterment and spread of disease when flooding occurred.

Comments

  • The graves are elevated because during heavy rain sometimes the bodies in the ground come out and people can see the bones so they built them grave above ground to protect the people
  • They tell you not to go in there at night, but they don't want to tell you why. You figure it out.
