  • Chengene Skele, or Gypsy Bay, is a small bay in the southern part of the Burgas Bay on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. The western end of the bay is located about 8 km south of the center of Burgas. Part of the bay was included in the Chengene Skele protected area in 1995. The Burgas district of Kraimorie (on the western shore), the oil port of Rosenets (on the northeastern shore) and the fishing village of Chengene Skele (on the southeastern shore) are located along the bay. The name of the bay is inherited from the settlement of Chingene iskelesi (also Chingene skela) located in the bay during Ottoman times, and which translates into Bulgarian as Gypsy Harbor. The other name of the bay, Tsiganska Skala, is an incorrect translation of the Turkish name, which did not take root. The name of the settlement comes from the Turkish word for gypsy (çingene), because during the Ottoman period this area was inhabited mainly by gypsies. The oldest information about the settlement dates back to around 1784, when it was designated as a town. While the settlement emerged and expanded mainly in the winter, in the 1900s the Burgas quarantine station, a small port, several inns and inns were built in the bay.
