"The Cedars" Main Gate/Gatehouse (Sands Point, New York)

USA / New York / Port Washington North / Sands Point, New York
LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, gatehouse

Originally part of the early 1700's 300-acre+ Dodge Family farm, from Hempstead Harbor west to Manhasset Bay. Purchased by William Bourke Cockran, educator, lawyer, U.S Representative from New York State, in the 1880's. The estate then called "The Cedars", which stretched from Hempstead Harbor to just west of Port Washington Boulevard, was bought by oil magnate Joshua S. Cosden after W. Bourke Cockran passed in 1923. In 1926 Cosden sold to nearby resident Vincent Astor who subsequently began the process to develop the property, now known as the Harbor Acres section of Sands Point. The main estate house remained amidst the development until the mid 2000's.
