Chalfant Station is part of the gas distribution system of the Peoples Natural Gas Company. It appears on maps as early as 1915, surrounded by the properties of the widow and heirs of John W. Chalfant. During World War II, Chalfant Station was the "key distribution station for steel-making Pittsburgh" and was guarded by employees with sawed-off shotguns.
