At 1340 Beulah Road, Churchill, Pittsburgh is the George Westinghouse Research & Technology Park which houses over 1 million square feet of testing, laboratory and office space. It was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill with Voorhees, Walker, Foley & Smith. At this location, until the late 1990's the Westinghouse Science and Technology Department supported all parts of the businesses of the Westinghouse Electric Company, specializing in material evaluations and testing, including next generation nuclear reactor designs, hot-cell capabilities, chemical processing and decision analysis. Since then the site has become much less central to Westinghouse R&D and is now shared with other tenants.

Site ownership was transferred recently from Viacom Inc. to Viacom/Westinghouse of Pa. Inc., which are both units of New York-based CBS. FT-Churchill owns the seven buildings at the site and leases their 1 million square feet of office space to CBS.

Tenants in the buildings included UPMC's community provider service division; Siemens Energy Inc. which has a fuel-cell research center there, and Westinghouse Electric Co., the nuclear power company based in Cranberry, which leases space in one building for research and administrative activity.

  • As a former researcher at the Beulah Road Center, cira 2000; I am sadden to see what was once a great group of specalized, very capable people, dispersed by a corporation that didn't do an adaquate job of managing a large diverse corporation. A lot of potential was lost, too bad. C.L.Zeise.
