According to the National Park Service, this is the finest surviving example of French colonial public architecture in the country. It is by some accounts the oldest structure in New Orleans and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960.

During Hurricane Katrina it suffered moderate damage, mostly from a collapsed chimney in the main building.
