The few remaining members of the Corps of Discovery split into two groups on 3 July 1806 so that Captain Meriwether Lewis could explore the Marias River while Captain Clark went south on horse back into Crow territory.
It is generally believed that Lewis and his three companions (George Drouillard and the two Fields brothers) camped here on 21 July 1806.
