This is what remains of the coal trestle, part of the KPPC rail spur. The trestle was originally used to deliver coal to building 6 and later to building 29, until it was converted to oil/natural gas. When 29 still used coal to fuel the boilers, the coal car would dump the coal into a chute which would empty directly into a steam tunnel connecting to the building (this steam tunnel was also the supply line for almost the entire hospital).

The rail spur was last used in the mid-1980s and the trestle was stripped down to its concrete piers at a later date. The piers were removed in August 2012.
