interesting place, animal shelter, tourist attraction

The K dock on Pier 39 was given over to wild California Sea Lions in February 1990. They had begun arriving in 1989 and using the K docks to haul out and rest, and by the start of 1991, their population was about 500. The original K docks were destroyed by the animals, and detached floating docks were put in their place. They have become a tourist attraction.

  • And noisy!
  • They have all but departed en masse, under mysterious circumstances. Some say its cause they are migratory, some say its cause they are all hunting fish offshore. My money is on an approaching earthquake. Animals always know in advance
  • They were back as of 01/12.
