In the 1850s Lord Palmerston had Forts Albert and Victoria built over the Solent near Yarmouth - both now lie in a park with a visitor centre and nature trail. A marine aquarium, a planetarium, a café, the Underwater Archaeology Centre (Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology), a model railroad layout display and ranger base from where, in the summer months, educational visits are operated by the countryside rangers are here. The Fort provides easy access to the beach, (although swimming is not advised in the sometimes fast-flowing channel) and excellent views of the Solent, Hurst Castle, and passing shipping.
