lake, manmade lake
Big Lake is man-made lake dating back to 1895 when park managers ordered a major excavation as part of their first major engineering project. The lake's shape is roughly modeled on the shape of Lake Pontchartrain. A pipe running beneath Wisner Boulevard allows water from Bayou St. John to flow directly into the lake.
It is also the site for the Annual City Park Big Bass Fishing Rodeo & Fishtival.
As part of a 2008 renovation, a 1-mile boardwalk was added around the lake, as well a fountain and freshwater gardens.
