Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, was built in 1826 as the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua. It was known as the Mortuary Chapel because it served as a burial church for victims of yellow fever. Under the city's laws at the time, wakes could not take place within the walls of the city, for fear of spreading the plague. It was erected close to St. Louis Cemeteries #1 and #2, which were the primary Catholic cemeteries at the time.
The church building is the oldest surviving church building in New Orleans, as all the older churches have since been rebuilt.
