Steel mill. This is the site of the former Carnegie-Illinois (US Steel) South Works that opened in 1899. Sharon Steel Corporation purchased the mill in 1945 and operated it until 1992 when it closed through bankruptcy. Portions of the mill later reopened to produce specialty steel products, and the mill eventually became owned by Duferco Farrell.
