In 2010, the population was 91,108. The county was added to the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area in 2003. The county seat is New Castle. Lawrence County was created on March 20, 1849, from parts of Beaver and Mercer counties. It was named after the USS Lawrence, Oliver Hazard Perry's original flagship at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

The old canal to Lake Erie, built in 1833, went through center of the county, and did much to develop the resources-bituminous coal, iron ore, and limestone. Chief industries, manufactories and agriculture. Many beautiful drives are all through the county in every direction.
