Formed March 12, 1800, Mercer County was named for General Hugh Mercer of the Revolutionary War, who was killed in the Battle of Princeton. Mercer County is comprised of rolling land, well watered with springs and creeks; it has coal underlying one-fourth of land in the county and the chief industries are iron, steel, and agriculture. The early settlers of Mercer County were Scotch-Irish.

As of 2010, the population was 116,638. Its county seat is Mercer, but Sharon is its largest city. Mercer County is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA MSA.
