KALAKAD is small beautiful village situated at the foothills of western ghats and is blessed with a rich agricultural heritage history due to which it changed many hands starting from Pandyas to Nayakas to Nawabs to Cheras and finally to the British till 1947.

Initially the reserve consisted of two adjacent wildlife sanctuaries. The area of the Kalakad Reserve was declared a Tiger sanctuary in 1962 and notified as a sanctuary in 1976. The Kalakad and Mundanthurai wildlife sanctuaries were made into a single Tiger reserve in 1996.

As per very recent findings of experts who inspected the big temple here, the earlier names have been found as " Cholakula vallipuram". Attemps are being made now to conduct major repairs to the Rajagopuram of the temple.   • I love Kalakad though I am from Padmaneri near by village. I studied in Govt.Board) High School, Kalakad and I am pass out student of 1976-77 batch. During my school days there were a lot of cultural activities happened in the two Schools i mean Meerania and Board High Schools. I still remember those days which is strongly written in my heart and cannot be erased. Ho! such a beautiful is Kalakad especially the natural beauty is excellent to watch. The Western Guard Mountains particularly the falls always can be seen from nearby village of Kalakad.I really miss you Kalakad and my native Padmaneri and want to settle down there.
