Karesuando Church

Norway / Finnmark / Kautokeino /

This is the northernmost church in the whole of Sweden. It stands a stone’s throw from the Swedish border. The original church was built in 1816, but unfortuantely collapsed and had to be rebuilt. It was in this building that the great revivalist preacher Lars Levi Laestadius was priest. The church has an interesting altarpiece which is worth seeing. It was created by Bror Hjort and depicts Pastor Laestadius and two followers, one of whom is a Sami girl.
