An old open pit iron ore mine that was closed and flooded in 1983, operated by LKAB. LKAB began in the autumn of 2007 to investigate the possibility of opening a new iron ore mine in Svappavaara, since the prospects for satisfying the growing demand by mining greater volumes in the existing mines in the Orefields were limited.
