Levke Fortress

Bulgaria / Pazardzhik / Belovo /
 ruins, archaeological site, fortification

The overgrown site of the Late Antique and Medieval fortified town of Leukē ("white" in Greek), rendered as Levke in Bulgarian (and responsible, in translation, for the modern toponyms of Goljamo Belovo and Belovo to the north). The town occupied the hill around the Sveti Spas (Holy Savior) Peak. Due to its relative isolation, the site is well-preserved, with numerous remains of the fortress walls, churches, cisterns, and various building; in some places the ruined walls reach 2 m in height. The imposing ruins of the monastery basilica to the southeast were also associated with the town; they are the most accessible part of the site.
