Former Mustin NAF Hangar (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

USA / New Jersey / National Park / Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
aircraft hangar, historical layer / disappeared object

Built in 1941, this hangar was the primary construction site for the PBN Nomad Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft. A one-off design of the Consolidated PBY Catalina, the PBN Nomad was designed, built, evaluated and distributed entirely by the Henry C. Mustin Naval Air Facility and by war’s end workers at the facility had built 156 aircraft.

Postwar, this hangar was utilized for various aircraft evaluations until the Naval Air Facilities closure in 1963, after which it became a commissary and indoor recreation center for workers at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. After the 1995 closure of the shipyard, the hanger was idled and remained unused for several years but is presently being used for film and TV productions.
