Philly Shipyard Inc. (formerly named Aker Philadelphia Shipyard) is a leading U.S. commercial shipyard which utilizes the former drydocks and berth spaces of the Philadelphia Navy Yard for oceangoing merchant vessel construction. It was built by Finnish shipbuilding firm Kvaerner. Kvaerner merged with Norwegian conglomerate Aker to form Aker-Kvaerner, but the name Kvaerner was dropped as it was determined that customers from outside Scandanavia had difficulty pronouncing Kvaerner. The shipyard was eventually rebranded to Philly Shipyard, Inc, but continues to be owned by Aker and the name Aker still appears on the Goliath Gantry Crane. As APSI it engaged primarily in building liquid bulk product tankers for US Jones Act Trades. It has also constructed several container ships for Matson, Inc. and is currently constructing new training ships for various maritime academies.
