Fort Hunt was named April 13, 1899 in honor the late Colonel and Brevet Major General Henry J. Hunt, U.S. Army.

1890s-era fort that guarded the river approach to Washington, D.C., now a public park and picnic area.

Improvements and development of infrastructure carried out in the park in 1936 was completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a New Deal program that operated between 1933 and 1942. The program provided work for unmarried, unemployed men who were struggling to find work during the Great Depression.

Home of the infamous WW2 PO Box 1142 Interrogation Centre.
