Mine № 4/4-bis (Makaryevsky) was established in 1880-s. June 18, 1908 there were was the largest mine accident in the history of the Russian Empire. 273 persons became the victims of the explosion of methane and coal dust.
In 1920, after another accident, the mine was closed.
  
In 1942-43., during the nazi occupation, a shaft was the site of mass executions of city residents. Here was brought bodies of already killed people, and executed produced here, dropping in pit alive.

After the liberation of the city bodies of 52 people were extract. They were buried in Mushketovo cemetery. According to various estimates, body from 75 to 102 thousand people remained in the mine shaft. It is the largest mass grave in the country after the Babi Yar.
