Salesforce Tower (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas), 1095
 office building, skyscraper, Modern (architecture)

630-foot, 40-story modernist office building originally completed in 1974. Designed by Kahn & Jacobs for the New York Telephone Company, it was completely reclad in 2006 to a new design by architects Moed de Armas & Shannon, with a green glass curtain wall replacing the original facade of striped white and black marble. The renovation also included the creation of the plaza to the west of the building.

The 2-story base is clad in clear glass with white spandrels and silver metal framing. A subway entrance is built into the north facade, with storefronts in the other ground-floor bays (there are eight bays along 6th Avenue, with the main entrance in the 3rd bay from the north). On the south facade, there are freight entrances at the west end. The west side of the tower is set back at the north and south, and extends up higher than the roof line of the other facades, with a number of black metal vents.

The tower was long-known as the Verizon Building, serving as headquarters for the company, who occupied the entire building until moving downtown in 2005. However, in 2014 Verizon moved some employees back to 1095 Avenue of the Americas, taking two floors. Current other tenants now include Salesforce (whose name is outside above the entryway, and takes up the most space in the tower), law firm Dechert LLP, iStar Financial, Bank of Scotland, Instinet and Centerline Capital.

The ground floor is occupied by a Whole Foods grocery, Allegro Coffee, Bucherer watches, and Pandora jewelry.
