There are 3 such storage sites in Bulgaria. One for each Bulgarian missile army. The sites were under Soviet control and operated by Soviet personnel. On Soviet orders, the nuclear warheads could have been transported to the nearest missile bases and mounted on tactical ballistic rockets.

A second site in Bulgaria can be seen here:

Comments

  • Currently exposed to illegal logging and metal scrap "salvaging".
  • It's a shame! The same happened to the two sites in Poland. The third one "survived" as it is now on a territory administered by a prison, so the scrap thieves do not like this area :-)
  • The former designation of this site was "ПРТБ - в/ч пп 74771 (Москва-400)". At least the inner perimeter was served by soviet soldiers. Lables and instructions on the walls are predominantly in Russian, old newspapers and small tags on keys scatered around the place are in Russian too. The place was serviced by the Bulgarian army at least until 2002. Major systems (like cranes, sliding doors, air ducts etc.) are professionally dismentled using power tools and special equipment (without any sign of vandalism) which clearly shows co-operation of the responsible institutions. The area is presumed to be "guarded" by a private subcontractor to the MoD.
  • Bullshit. Both sides in the SALT and START treaties were required to show their warheads and allow verification by the other side. The US has never accused Russia of hiding nuclear arms.
