Walum is an unincorporated community in Griggs County, North Dakota. The population was 65 at the 1970 Census. This Northern Pacific Railroad station built in September 1902 was first called GUNDERSON when development began in 1900, but the name was soon changed to WALUM, honoring Martinus O. Wallum, a prosperous farmer adjacent to the site. The variation in the spelling is said to have been done by a postal official who preferred his version of Mr. Wallum's name. The post office was established November 7, 1904, and the village was platted May 17, 1905 in Sections 29 & 30-144-59, Greenfield Township. WALUM never had a boom period, with a peak population of 100 being claimed in 1920, but an actual count of just 30 in 1960. The elevation is 1454, and the post office, Zip Code 58491, closed August 1, 1973 with mail to Hannaford.
