The steep rise straight up the bank to Victoria Avenue from the Traffic Bridge is called the Short Hill. The more gradual route to the top, which ran along the face of the bank to Broadway Avenue, is called the Long Hill. The challenge of the Short Hill’s steep grade was too much for most wagon teams, and later for the street cars which commenced operation on New Year’s Day, 1913. They had to be routed up the Long Hill and then along Broadway Avenue. It was also a harrowing ride for early automobiles in winter, as they would sometimes skid out of control down the icy slope.
