The site for the construction of the monument was determined in 1901 by a special commission, which included 9 members of the Hristo Botev detachment. They chose an accessible place, located as close as possible to the place of the last battle of the revolutionary detachment in 1876.
At the foot of Okolchitsa Peak on Kolova Polyana in 1926 a 35-meter monument with a volunteer cross was erected to commemorate the feat of Hristo Botev and his detachment.
The sign was a four-meter Russian Orthodox cross - a cross worn by volunteers during the national liberation struggle. In 1936, the Botev Committee in Vratsa undertook the construction of the monument around Okolchitsa, designed by architect Petar Dogramadzhiev and eng. Nikola Novoselski in the form of an octagonal cross 28 meters high. Construction was completed in 1939.
