residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, Victorian Gothic (architecture)
Farmhouse built c. 1830 in the Federal style for the Hicks family known as "Springbank" which was sold to Joseph Moulton. It was later purchased in 1852 by William Cullen Bryant {Cedarmere} for his daughter Fanny, who married Parke Godwin. In 1869, they had outgrown the house so they commissioned alterations by Vaux, Withers and Co. Calvert Vaux was especially known for his involvement in the design of Central Park however they were also known for their work on altering farmhouses while still remaining true to the original design. This was especially so in the case of "Montrose" as many of the original Victorian and Federal elements were preserved with careful romanticized moldings which were characteristic of the period as well as Vaux's signature work.
Following Fanny Bryant Goodwin's death in 1893, it was inherited by Parke Goodwin who in turn deeded it to his daughter Minna. They in turn renamed the estate "Clover Croft", however Minna's late brother's son Conrad changed the name back to the original as it was more appropriate its history and location. Roslyn Carpeter Benjamin Speedling likely performed alterations in 1904 in the Colonial Revival style. Conrad occupied the home until 1955 when it was sold to a developer who subdivided the land while retaining the original home.
