The Tai-Ahom kingdom in Assam was born in 1228 AD and ended with the British take over in 1826 AD. During their 600 year long rule the Tai-Ahoms made sure that the Mughal's never ruled any part of Assam and North East even though the whole of India was under Delhi sultanete.
To keep the Mughals out, they built many defensive structures called "gor" locally across Assam to halt advancing enemy army. These structure were built with natural materials and characterised by water bodies on both sides which is the common structural rule among Tai's across Asia.

This fortification has been referred to as Garchuk Lachit Garh in Wikipedia
The Chiangmai town is surrounded by such "gor" structures, so is Sukhothai and other historic Thai settlement.
As of today, the gor's of Assam are a forgotten thing with rampent encrochment and destruction due to local Governments negligence and loss of power of the Tai-Ahom's in today's Assam.
The Indian Army however has come forward to preserve the old gor's in some places of Assam. One example would be the gor near Misa in Nagaon district in central Assam.
Hopefully the Indian Army takes over restoration and preservation of the Gorchuk gor near Ahomgaon in Guwahati city in the near future.
