Jim Bowie of Alamo fame, did live for a time on the Vermilion River south of Abbeville. He and his brother John were in the slave trade business with Jean Lafitte. When Lafitte captured a slave ship, he would deliver the slaves to Bowie's Island. The Bowie's would buy the slaves and transport them up the Vermilion River, selling some along the way, as they traveled north towards Opelousas.
