On this island in 1865, a slave boat captain dropped off his cargo of 200 slaves. The captain was unaware that the war was over and rather than be hanged for slave trading, he stranded his shackled slaves on this island to die while he headed for home. Many locals recall seeing bones and skulls all over the island in the ensuing years, and they avoided the island at all costs.

  • My son and I made a trip to this island a few years back. It was covered with poison ivy so I didn’t go much off the narrow sandy beach. My lab was swimming in the Intercostal Waterway on the north side of the island and an alligator was seen swimming towards her. We got her back in the boat and got out of there.
