The present day city of Struthers occupies a patch of land purchased in 1798 by John Struthers of Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1802, the Eaton brothers constructed on Yellow Creek the first blast furnace in Ohio, marking the beginning of the iron and steel industry in the Mahoning Valley. Bruce Springsteen mentioned the furnace in the opening line of his 1995 song "Youngstown."
