Established during World War I as a field artillery firing range and named Gigling Military Reservation. Redesignated Camp Ord on 9 October 1933 in honor of Maj. Gen. Edward O.C. Ord. Redesignated Fort Ord on 14 October 1940.
East Garrison is the location of the original garrison at Fort Ord and the first permanent buildings. Prior to that, the area was used on and off by the Army from 1846 to 1902 by cavalry and infantry troops. In 1917, the U.S. Army purchased 15,000 acres from David Jacks in 1917 to develop what would become a permanent Army post. Camp Gigling was used to train cavalry units located at the Monterey Presidio. Permanent structures such as mess halls and barracks were built in the '30s. It was used for combat training during WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Panama Canal deployment, and the Vietnam War.
Formerly home to the 7th Division from 1940 to 1941, the 17th Infantry from 1940 to 1941, the 53rd Infantry from 1940 to 1941, and the 31st Field Artillery from 1940 to 1941.
