Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant (decomissioned)
The Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant (or SFAAP) was a smokeless powder and propellant manufacturing facility in northwest Johnson County, Kansas owned by the United States Government and operated under contract, primarily by Hercules Aerospace Company.

The Department of Defense has designated Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant as eligible for classification as excess status and therefore eligible for eventual turnover to private ownership.

  • Hooray!
  • so it is! This plant opened during WW2 to make ammo for our troops and it also provided good paying and much needed jobs for the locals..the "arsenal for democracy" as it were. The plant was then shut down, only to reopen for the Korean War and also the Viet Nam war. Looking at an aerial photo of the site, you can see how they located the ammo bunkers evenly spaced apart so that if one blew up the others would not.
  • http://www.kawbsd.net/SFAAP/index.html This sums up SFAAP operations. The page now has some age to it, but, it's very informative if you're into these things. -JLK
