Islampur Upazila of jamalpur district with an area of 343.02 sq km, is bounded by Dewanganj and Bakshiganj upazilas on the north, Madarganj and Melandaha upazilas on the south, Sherpur sadar and Sreebardi upazilas on the east, Sariakandi, Sughatta and Fulchhari upazilas on the west. Main rivers are old Brahmaputra, jamuna, Chatal and Alai. Kata khal and Dashani khal are important; depressions 8: Bakar, Kumargari, Bamna, Singhbhanga, Hashal, Paikha, Bara Setrail and Chilmari Beel.
Islampur thana, now an upazila, was established in 1914. The geographic coordinates of Islampur town are 25.0771777N 89.7837526E degree. The upazila consists of one municipality 12 union parishads, 86 mouzas and 169 villages.

As of 1991 Bangladesh census, Population 268352; male 51.09%, female 48.91%; Muslim 97.82%, Hindu 1.52%, Buddhist 0.15%, Christian 0.14% and others 0.37%.
Average literacy 15.9%; male 20.8% and female 10.6%. Educational institutions: college 2, secondary school 26, madrasa 12, government primary school 79, non-government primary school 59.
