This Northern Pacific Railroad station was built in 1884 in Section 20-140-57, Alta Township between Valley City and Oriska. It is located on the summit of Alta Ridge at the east edge of the Sheyenne River valley, so named because its elevation of 1454 is more than 200 feet higher than the 1218 elevation at Valley City. On July 29, 1923 the name was changed to ALTA, although a nearby elevator built in 1915 continues to use the original name. The site still appears on some maps.
