Paved with rough stone, this area is the above-ground pedestrian access connector between the National Gallery of Art wings: the West Building which houses traditional art and the East Building which exhibits modern art. The circle of bollards protects both the sunken fountain's sloped cascade and also the glass pyramid skylights. Under this area, the Concourse Tunnel provides access with shelter from weather and the 4th Street traffic.
