Remnants of the colonial times when slaves worked the salt pans and ships used the obelisk to determine where to load.
During 19th century four obelisks were erected to mark the area where ships would dock to be loaded with salt. A flag would fly from the obelisk that was being worked. The obelisks are blue, red, white and orange, the colors of the Dutch flag and the Royal Family. The blue obelisk marks the site of the current salt pier (located north of here) used to load vessels nowadays.
