Santiago de los Caballeros

This is the first "Santiago" in America (there's also a Santiago in Cuba, and another one in Chile), and the second largest city in the Dominican Republic, although it is probably the most important one as about 75% of the wealth of the country comes from families in Santiago, which has a great legacy of spaniards, lebaneese, and mixed races (mostly descendants of black slaves mixed with spaniards during the colonnial times). Together with the capital Santo Domingo, the city has the fastest-growing economy in the country.

  • Santiago also has a population of Converso Jews, (people unaware that their family was once Jewish). Furhter, there are Jews albeit unobservant that remain in Santiago.
  • While it is accurate that Santiago is the richest city under Dominican Government, a significant amount of the wealth of the country actually comes from Dominicans in the US. Actually, in number of Dominicans, New York NY would be the "second" city after Santo Domingo. Traditional amber crafts are made in Santiago
