Salt water is pumped into these large semi-deep basins where it is left to partially evaporate under the strong Carribean Sun. The decrease in water content and increase in salt content begins to change the water from a blue color to dark and light shades of green, as different forms of algae, brine shirmp and bacteria begin to thrive in the high salinity water.

Once the basin water has reached a proper level of salinity, it is pumped into the shallow crystallizer basins, where it is left to fully evaporate under the sun, leaving only salt crystals behind.
