These pans comprised one of the sites where salt was originally harvested in Bonaire. This site, now called white slave because of the white obelisk and slave huts that marked the site for loading ships, is one of the oldest on the island. Slaves, originally from Africa, and islanders would walk from Rincon in the north to this site at the beginning of the week and live in the small huts onsite, then walk back on the weekends to be with their families. Workers called it "White Hell."
