Drake's Island (previously known as St Michael's and St Nicholas, cf: Wikipedia article) is a small island lying in Plymouth Sound, the stretch of water south of the city of Plymouth.
Here (www.ecastles.co.uk/drakes.html) is an article about the fort on the island.

Napoleon was kept prisoner here for some time after his capture by the English.

  • The story about Napoleon may be wishful. There is no doubt Napoleon was in the harbour in 1815 on board Bellerophon before being transferred to Northumberland (taking him to St Helena), but I can find no reference to him being allowed off the ship. If you have a reference, drop me a note.
  • What a shame this is not open to the public. The former chairman of Plymouth Argyle football club bought it and has`nt done a thing with it as far as I know!
