Kupena Reserve

Kupena is reserve with Ordinance № 2969 from 24.11.1961 by the General Directorate of Forestry at the Council of Ministers. The reserve was expanded to three times its current size of 1761.1 hectares.
The reserve falls within the protected zone BG0001030 Rodopi-Zapadni/Western Rhodopes under the Habitats Directive and in the protected zone BG0002063 Zapadni Rodopi/Western Rhodopes under the Birds Directive.
The uniqueness of natural ecosystems has been evaluated by UNESCO and included in the list of biosphere reserves by decision of 1 March 1977, but withdrawn in 2017.
The reserve was created in order to maintain the population of wild goat (Rupicarpa rupicarpa).
