residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, Italianate style (architecture)
Estate home designed c. 1912 by by Delano & Aldrich in the Italian Renaissance style on 121 acres of land for Victor Morawetz {attorney}. Morawetz was a partner in the law firm of Seward, Guthrie, Morawetz & Steele who fought and won to have the income tax stopped until passage of the 16th Amendment to the Constitution.
The estate was later purchased in 1927 by Andrew Mellon as a Christmas present for his daughter, Ailsa Mellon Bruce, who renamed the estate, "Woodlands". In 1968, Ailsa was listed as the richest women in the U.S., with a of fortune of $500 million. Her husband David Kirkpatrick Este Bruce served as an American diplomatic ambassador from 1949-75 and trustee of the Frick Museum and Metropolitan Opera Company among others. They commissioned murals by Victor White in 1930.
After Mellon's death, the property was purchased by the Town of Oyster Bay. Artifacts from the Mellon family's tenure are included in a large collection of personal items and artwork donated to the Carnegie Museum in PA. Ailsa Mellon Bruce also endowed a professorship at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.
Today the property is now adaptively used as the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course/Woodlands at Westbury.
