"Krivus" Medieval Fortress

Bulgaria / Kardzhali / Ardino /
ruined castle, Medieval / Middle Ages, 10th century construction

The earliest data for the fortress are given by G. Acropolit in his ”Annals”. The fortress is situated around 4 km north of Bashevo village in an accessible place. Arda river surrounds the fortress on three sides. The citadel is located in the southern part. It is with sizes 50/40 m with two well preserved entrances, towers, walls, embrasures and fighting arena. The wall is massive with width of 2.5 m and 1.75 m in the upper part. At some places the entire wall is preserved in its full height of 7 m.
The exterior of the fortress is one wall 1.75 m wide and 170 m long following the river bank. A well was found on the territory of the fortress that was probably filled by the river. Now it is covered up and hard to find. There are fragments of medieval pottery and a medieval necropolis nearby.
