Cape Hinchinbrook Lighthouse

USA / Alaska / Tatitlek /
Second World War 1939-1945, lighthouse, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, Art Deco (architecture), historic landmark, historic district

Historic lighthouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a historic district.

Built: 1934
Architect: Edward W. Laird; Dwight A. Chase
Architectural style: Art Deco
Area: 6.9 acres
Also known as: Cape Hinchinbrook Light Station
Date added to NRHP: 6/29/2005
Other designations: U.S. Historic District; Light Stations of the United States Multiple Property Submission
Notes: This lighthouse replaced an earlier light that had been built in 1910 but was abandoned after earthquakes damaged the rock outcroppings on which it had been built.

The US Navy built a radio direction finder station here in 1939. It was later chosen as the site of an SCR-271 radar Aircraft Warning Station, but after construction began the decision was made to use the equipment further west so the AWS site was never completed nor used.
