Dover is a major channel port in the English county of Kent, and is famed for Cross-channel ferries and the white chalk cliffs. At the 2001 census, the town of Dover proper had a population of 28,156, while the population of the urban area was 39,078 inhabitants. It is one of the Confederation of Cinque Ports, the major ports for cross-channel ships along the Sussex and Kent coasts.
